In 2018\, he founded JapanCraft21 to identify viable but vulnerable traditional Japanese crafts and assist in their revitalization. They started Shinmachiya Juku\, a free-of-charge school in Kyoto that teaches traditional construction skills to working carpenters and plasterers\, and a program that supports apprenticeship in vulnerable craft genres. Additionally\, they hold national contests in support of talented craftspeople. Their Craft Leader Program promotes the work of their 30 contest winners to date. Steve recently retired from Esprit Travel and Tours\, a U.S.-based Japanese culture-focused tour company that he founded in 1992. At Esprit\, he connected travelers from around the world with talented and gracious Japanese people\, enabling them to encounter the richness and beauty of Japanese culture. Prior to that\, Steve ran a large U.S.-based wholesale plant growing operation with Japanese partners\, serving the landscape construction industry during California’s construction boom years. He holds an M.A. in Applied Counseling Psychology\, and he currently lives in the Kyoto foothills with his wife of over 42 years\, Ritsuko\, an ikebana instructor. \nMODERATOR \nJapan Society of Northern California | Steve Pollock\, President \nSteve Pollock is the President of Japan Society of Northern California (JSNC). Apart from his management responsibilities\, he is also an avid consumer of JSNC’s diverse programming on topics ranging from Japanese arts and culture\, to business and innovation\, healthcare\, and policy and economics. Participants are meant to involve all of the senses and experience a serene feeling of spiritual discipline\, harmony and tranquility. There are many schools of tea ceremony\, but here at Shinzen Garden\, guests will experience the Omote-Senke style. The Omote-Senke school is one of three san-senke schools whose founding tea master is Sen no Rikyū. You’ll learn how matcha is traditionally prepared and gain insight into the tools used in Japanese tea practice\, including the chasen (bamboo whisk) and chawan (tea bowl). \nGuests will then have the opportunity to whisk and prepare their own bowl of matcha\, practicing the techniques used to create a smooth\, vibrant\, and frothy tea. Space is limited\, so reserve your seat today! \nTicket holders are invited to observe the peace and quietude of this traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony and enjoy a cup of green tea and a Japanese sweet. \n*THIS TICKET IS FOR THE 1:30 PM DEMONSTRATION \nThe tea ceremony (called cha-no-yu\, sadō\, or chadō in Japanese) incorporates strict etiquette\, which serves as the foundation of its choreographed movements and gives the experience its overall form and aesthetic. Participants are meant to involve all of the senses and experience a serene feeling of spiritual discipline\, harmony and tranquility. There are many schools of tea ceremony\, but here at Shinzen Garden\, guests will experience the Omote-Senke style. The Omote-Senke school is one of three san-senke schools whose founding tea master is Sen no Rikyū. Each school has subtle stylistic differences and varying techniques\, but the Omote-Senke school is distinguished by its tea whisking style and the thin foam created by this technique. \nOur tea ceremony will be performed by Terumi Takahashi\, trained by the School of Omeote-Senke in Kyoto\, Japan. \n \n
