DESCRIPTION:OCTOBER 2025 BOOK SELECTION\n\nEpitaph for a Peach\nby: David Mas Masumoto\nA lyrical\, sensuous and thoroughly engrossing memoir of one critical year in the life of an organic peach farmer\, Epitaph for a Peach is “a delightful narrative…with poetic flair and a sense of humor” (Library Journal). \nDavid Mas Masumoto is a third-generation farmer\, David Mas Masumoto grows peaches\, nectarines\, grapes and raisins on an organic 80 acre farm south of Fresno\, California. Masumoto is currently a columnist for and The Fresno Bee and a regular contributor to the Sacramento Bee. \nHe was a Kellogg Foundation Food and Society Policy Fellow from 2006-2008. His writing awards include Commonwealth Club Silver medal\, Julia Child Cookbook award\, the James Clavell Literacy Award and a finalist in the James Beard Foundation awards. He received the “Award of Distinction” from UC Davis in 2003 and the California Central Valley “Excellence in Business” Award in 2007. He has served as chair of the California Council for the Humanities. \nHe is currently a board member of the James Irvine Foundation and serves on the Statewide Leadership Council to the Public Policy Institute of California. In 2013 he also joined the National Council on the Arts through an appointment by President Obama. \nMasumoto is married to Marcy Masumoto\, Ed.d.\, and they have a daughter\, Nikiko\, and a son\, Korio. \n  \nORDER THE BOOK HERE\n  \nSeasons of Stories is a new book club at Shinzen Garden that invites readers to gather in the natural setting of the garden to explore literature inspired by Japanese culture and explore books from Japanese American authors.  We will be diving into a thoughtfully selected book each month and enjoy meaningful conversations surrounded by the beauty of the garden. SUMMARY:Seasons of Stories Book Club July Meeting
DESCRIPTION:JULY BOOK SELECTION\nFacing the Mountain: An inspiring Story of Japanese American Patriots in World War II\nBy Daniel James Brown\n \nIn the days and months after Pearl Harbor\, the lives of Japanese Americans across the continent and Hawaii were changed forever. In this unforgettable chronicle of war-time America and the battlefields of Europe\, Daniel James Brown portrays the journey of Rudy Tokiwa\, Fred Shiosaki\, and Kats Miho\, who volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and were deployed to France\, Germany\, and Italy\, where they were asked to do the near impossible. \nBrown also tells the story of these soldiers’ parents\, immigrants who were forced to submit to life in concentration camps on U.S. soil. She serves as an adjunct instructor at Reedley College\, part of the State Center Community College District\, where she shares her expertise in English and writing. Jackie holds a Masters Degree from California State University\, Fresno\, and is known for her supportive and approachable teaching style. The series will showcase the vibrant voices of Fresno-area poets and offer one open mic event to welcome emerging and community writers. \nIncluded with Garden Admission \nMeet Our Poets: \n Joseph Voth is the author of Living with Noise\, published by NorthShore Press. His poems have appeared in Virginia Quarterly Review\, Connecticut Review\, South Carolina Review\, ZYZZYVA\, and numerous other journals. He teaches writing courses at Fresno City College. \n Michelle Patton received an MFA in Creative Writing from California State University\, Fresno. She won the Ernesto Trejo Award for poetry in 2003 and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her poems have been published in The Atlanta Review\, Southern Poetry Review\, Calyx\, Zyzzyva\, Prairie Schooner\, Cutbank\, and others. She teaches English at Fresno City College. \n  \n  \n  \n Kirk Stone grew up on the California coast near strawberry fields and the ocean. He received an MFA in Creative Writing from Fresno State where he facilitated small writing groups for many years. He recently retired to Visalia to live among citrus and grapevines.
