SUMMARY:Hiroshima and Nagasaki Remembrance Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin Shinzen Garden and the Human Right Coalition of the Central Valley for the 81st Annual Hiroshima & Nagasaki Atomic Bombing Remembrance\, a solemn evening of reflection\, remembrance\, and hope for a more peaceful world. \nEach year\, communities around the globe gather to honor the victims and survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima on August 6\, 1945\, and Nagasaki on August 9\, 1945. These bombings remain the only use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict and continue to serve as a powerful reminder of the devastating human cost of war and the enduring importance of peace. Annual memorial ceremonies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are dedicated to remembering those who were lost and renewing a commitment to a world free from nuclear weapons. \nThe remembrance ceremony at Shinzen Garden provides an opportunity for our community to gather in a spirit of reflection and unity. Through words of remembrance\, cultural observances\, and moments of quiet contemplation\, we honor the memories of those whose lives were forever changed by the events of August 1945 and recognize the resilience of the hibakusha—the survivors who have dedicated their lives to sharing messages of peace. \n Guests are invited to reflect on the importance of understanding history\, fostering compassion\, and building a future rooted in peace and mutual respect. This annual observance serves not only as a memorial to those who perished\, but also as a call to future generations to preserve the lessons of the past. \nThe event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. We do ask that RSVP.

SUMMARY:Seasons of Stories Book Club August Meeting
DESCRIPTION:AUGUST 2026 BOOK SELECTION\n\nConvenience Store Woman\nby: Sayaka Murata\n  \n \nThe English-language debut of one of Japan’s most talented contemporary writers\, selling over 650\,000 copies there\, Convenience Store Woman is the heartwarming and surprising story of thirty-six-year-old Tokyo resident Keiko Furukura. Keiko has never fit in\, neither in her family\, nor in school\, but when at the age of eighteen she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of “Smile Mart\,” she finds peace and purpose in her life. In the store\, unlike anywhere else\, she understands the rules of social interaction-many are laid out line by line in the store’s manual–and she does her best to copy the dress\, mannerisms\, and speech of her colleagues\, playing the part of a “normal” person excellently\, more or less. Managers come and go\, but Keiko stays at the store for eighteen years. It’s almost hard to tell where the store ends and she begins. Keiko is very happy\, but the people close to her\, from her family to her coworkers\, increasingly pressure her to find a husband\, and to start a proper career\, prompting her to take desperate action… \nA brilliant depiction of an unusual psyche and a world hidden from view\, Convenience Store Woman is an ironic and sharp-eyed look at contemporary work culture and the pressures to conform\, as well as a charming and completely fresh portrait of an unforgettable heroine. \n. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nORDER THE BOOK HERE\n  \nSeasons of Stories is a new book club at Shinzen Garden that invites readers to gather in the natural setting of the garden to explore literature inspired by Japanese culture and explore books from Japanese American authors.  We will be diving into a thoughtfully selected book each month and enjoy meaningful conversations surrounded by the beauty of the garden. SUMMARY:Seasons of Stories Book Club October Meeting
DESCRIPTION:OCTOBER 2026 BOOK SELECTION\n\nKokoro\nby: Natsume Soseki\n  \n \nNo collection of Japanese literature is complete without Natsume Soseki’s Kokoro\, his most famous novel and the last he completed before his death. Published here in the first new translation in more than fifty years\, Kokoro—meaning “heart”—is the story of a subtle and poignant friendship between two unnamed characters\, a young man and an enigmatic elder whom he calls “Sensei.” Haunted by tragic secrets that have cast a long shadow over his life\, Sensei slowly opens up to his young disciple\, confessing indiscretions from his own student days that have left him reeling with guilt\, and revealing\, in the seemingly unbridgeable chasm between his moral anguish and his student’s struggle to understand it\, the profound cultural shift from one generation to the next that characterized Japan in the early twentieth century. SUMMARY:How Dragons and Bells Make Rain in Japan - Virtual Lecture
DESCRIPTION:VIRTUAL LECTURE – How Dragons and Bells Make Rain in Japan\nFor centuries\, humans have sought supernatural assistance for relief from droughts and floods. In Japan\, tenth-century records show that dragons were enlisted in imperial rainmaking rituals. Buddhist texts and Asian folklore are ripe with tales of dragon kings who dwell in an undersea palace and have control over storms. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Sherry Fowler will introduce long-forgotten strategies rural communities developed that employed large temple bells beyond their sound-making\, including soaking them in water or parading floats of bells. \nThis lecture is hosted by the Japan Foundation Los Angeles \nREGISTER HERE
