SUMMARY:Seasons of Stories Book Club June Meeting
DESCRIPTION:JUNE 2026 BOOK SELECTION\n\nThe Guest Cat\nby: Takashi Hiraide\n  \n \nA bestseller in France and winner of Japan’s Kiyama Shohei Literary Award\, The Guest Cat\, by the acclaimed poet Takashi Hiraide\, is a subtly moving and exceptionally beautiful novel about the transient nature of life and idiosyncratic but deeply felt ways of living. A couple in their thirties live in a small rented cottage in a quiet part of Tokyo; they work at home\, freelance copy-editing; they no longer have very much to say to one another. But one day a cat invites itself into their small kitchen. It leaves\, but the next day comes again\, and then again and again. Soon they are buying treats for the cat and enjoying talks about the animal and all its little ways. Life suddenly seems to have more promise for the husband and wife — the days have more light and color. The novel brims with new small joys and many moments of staggering poetic beauty\, but then something happens…. \nAs Kenzaburo Oe has remarked\, Takashi Hiraide’s work “really shines.” His poetry\, which is remarkably cross-hatched with beauty\, has been acclaimed here for “its seemingly endless string of shape-shifting objects and experiences\, whose splintering effect is enacted via a unique combination of speed and minutiae.” \n  \n  \n  \n  \nORDER THE BOOK HERE\n  \nSeasons of Stories is a new book club at Shinzen Garden that invites readers to gather in the natural setting of the garden to explore literature inspired by Japanese culture and explore books from Japanese American authors.  We will be diving into a thoughtfully selected book each month and enjoy meaningful conversations surrounded by the beauty of the garden. All are welcome—bring your curiosity and love for stories! \nJoin our online club by scanning the QR Code\n \n

SUMMARY:Seasons of Stories Book Club July Meeting
DESCRIPTION:JULY 2026 BOOK SELECTION\n\nKitchen\nby: Banana Yoshimoto\n  \n \nWith the publication of Kitchen\, the dazzling English-language debut that is still her best-loved book\, the literary world realized that Yoshimoto was a young writer of enduring talent whose work has quickly earned a place among the best of contemporary Japanese literature. Kitchen is an enchantingly original book that juxtaposes two tales about mothers\, love\, tragedy\, and the power of the kitchen and home in the lives of a pair of free-spirited young women in contemporary Japan. Mikage\, the heroine\, is an orphan raised by her grandmother\, who has passed away. Grieving\, Mikage is taken in by her friend Yoichi and his mother (who is really his cross-dressing father) Eriko. As the three of them form an improvised family that soon weathers its own tragic losses\, Yoshimoto spins a lovely\, evocative tale with the kitchen and the comforts of home at its heart. \nIn a whimsical style that recalls the early Marguerite Duras\, “Kitchen” and its companion story\, “Moonlight Shadow\,” are elegant tales whose seeming simplicity is the ruse of a very special writer whose voice echoes in the mind and the soul. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nORDER THE BOOK HERE\n  \nSeasons of Stories is a new book club at Shinzen Garden that invites readers to gather in the natural setting of the garden to explore literature inspired by Japanese culture and explore books from Japanese American authors.  We will be diving into a thoughtfully selected book each month and enjoy meaningful conversations surrounded by the beauty of the garden. SUMMARY:Hiroshima and Nagasaki Remembrance Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin Shinzen Garden and the Human Right Coalition of the Central Valley for the 81st Annual Hiroshima & Nagasaki Atomic Bombing Remembrance\, a solemn evening of reflection\, remembrance\, and hope for a more peaceful world. \nEach year\, communities around the globe gather to honor the victims and survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima on August 6\, 1945\, and Nagasaki on August 9\, 1945. These bombings remain the only use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict and continue to serve as a powerful reminder of the devastating human cost of war and the enduring importance of peace. Annual memorial ceremonies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are dedicated to remembering those who were lost and renewing a commitment to a world free from nuclear weapons. \nThe remembrance ceremony at Shinzen Garden provides an opportunity for our community to gather in a spirit of reflection and unity. Through words of remembrance\, cultural observances\, and moments of quiet contemplation\, we honor the memories of those whose lives were forever changed by the events of August 1945 and recognize the resilience of the hibakusha—the survivors who have dedicated their lives to sharing messages of peace. \n Guests are invited to reflect on the importance of understanding history\, fostering compassion\, and building a future rooted in peace and mutual respect. This annual observance serves not only as a memorial to those who perished\, but also as a call to future generations to preserve the lessons of the past. \nThe event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. We do ask that RSVP.

SUMMARY:September Koi Watercolor Class
DESCRIPTION:Let your brush flow like water in this botanical watercolor class inspired by the koi of Shinzen Garden on September 26\, 2026. Participants will learn watercolor techniques while capturing the graceful movement\, vibrant colors\, and symbolic beauty of koi swimming among lotus and reflections. This class is welcoming to all skill levels and offers a peaceful\, hands-on creative experience set within the garden’s serene surroundings. You’ll leave with a finished painting—and a moment of calm you can carry with you long after the class ends. \nPre-registration is required. \n  \nMeet your instructor: Noelle Correia – Born under a full moon in Scorpio in Fresno\, California\, after spending time tinkering around at her father’s auto repair/welding shop as a child\, Noelle began to create an imaginary world out of carpenter’s chalk drawings of discarded car parts. This world turned the industrial environment of downtown Fresno into a delusional paradise. Noelle left Fresno at eighteen but took her imaginary world with her and continues to process the nuance and grit of everyday cultural collision through fluvial imagery. \nHer creative process begins with color. Noelle is inspired by how the color schemes pop in biodiversity\, such as a poisonous dart frog’s epidermal layers resting on a muted green leaf. The biodiverse thread within her creative practice is that of Botanical Surrealism. She begins her work by thinking about the relationship between emotions and color and allows color theory to drive the outcome. Symbols that represent the feminine mystique and practical magic are a reoccurring thematic backdrop. The process has become a life metaphor in which she works through obstacles\, obtains epiphanies\, and understands herself as a tiny part of a much larger whole. \nShe conveys the beauty and complexities of human nature using texture\, pattern\, and narrative elements throughout her work. Her work has been exhibited in California Galleries and collectives exhibitions\, including Radius Gallery\, The Art Cave\, The Art League of Santa Cruz County\, Pajaro Valley Arts Gallery\, and Arte Americas. Noelle’s work further explores the botanical world through watercolor painting\, paper-cut collage practices\, and encaustic medium. Through wax\, water\, and human narratives of all kinds\, Noelle creates a vibrant play on color and form.

SUMMARY:October Botanical Watercolor
DESCRIPTION:Slow down\, look closely\, and let nature guide your brush. In this botanical watercolor class at Shinzen Garden on October 24\, 2026\, participants will explore the delicate beauty of leaves\, flowers\, and seasonal plant life while learning foundational watercolor techniques in a serene garden setting. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned artist\, this class offers gentle instruction\, creative freedom\, and plenty of inspiration drawn directly from the garden around you. Come paint\, relax\, and leave with a finished piece that captures a moment of Shinzen’s natural beauty.
