Shinzen Friendship Garden paper crane display

For more than four decades, Shinzen Friendship Garden has served as a place of peace, cultural connection, education, and reflection for the Central Valley community. Located within Woodward Park, the garden welcomes thousands of visitors each year who come not only to experience the beauty of a traditional North American Japanese Garden, but to find a meaningful connection to nature, culture, and one another.

Shinzen Garden impacts the community by creating accessible opportunities for cultural education, artistic expression, wellness, and intergenerational engagement. Families stroll the pathways together, students participate in educational tours, artists teach watercolor and writing workshops, and volunteers dedicate thousands of hours annually to preserving the garden’s beauty and traditions. For many visitors, Shinzen is more than a destination — it is a sanctuary.

The garden’s programming reflects the diversity and spirit of Fresno. Through Japanese tea ceremonies, botanical watercolor classes, poetry readings, origami workshops, Japanese language courses, pruning demonstrations, wellness walks, and cultural festivals, Shinzen creates opportunities for people of all backgrounds to engage with Japanese arts and traditions in an approachable and welcoming environment. These programs often serve individuals who may not otherwise have access to arts and cultural experiences in the region.

Shinzen Garden also plays an important role in fostering community healing and remembrance. Annual events such as the Hiroshima & Nagasaki Remembrance Ceremony and Toro Nagashi lantern floating ceremony bring hundreds of community members together in reflection, peace, and shared humanity. Visitors frequently describe the garden as one of the few places in the region where they can slow down, reconnect, and experience calm in the middle of increasingly stressful lives.

Beyond public programming, Shinzen’s impact can be seen in the dedication of its volunteers and supporters. Community members of all ages work side-by-side maintaining the landscape, caring for bonsai collections, leading tours, and helping preserve an important cultural resource for future generations. Their collective efforts strengthen civic pride, cultural understanding, and environmental stewardship throughout the Fresno community.

As Fresno continues to grow, Shinzen Garden remains committed to its mission: to create and grow a North American Japanese Garden that engages and inspires our community. Through art, culture, nature, and education, Shinzen provides a place where people can gather, learn, reflect, and belong.
